California DMV Records: Accessing Them Thru the Internet

California DMV records can be accessed online only to a very limited extent. Although the forms are available online, you will still need to either visit your local DMV in person or use the postal system to get copies of records and pay the required fees.

The California DMV records licenses and vehicles of around 20 million drivers in the state of California. This huge collection of data, which includes 26 million vehicle registrations, is not yet fully accessible through the Internet. However, the California DMV records web pages still allow you to get a lot done online.

California DMV Records: Things You Can Do Online

When requesting driving records, do all you can online. But you must know that the California DMV does not accept credit card payments. You can instead pay cash or use a check or money order. Some offices may allow you to use your ATM or debit card as well. Another option is an e-check or online banking/checking, which your bank can tell you more about.

The California DMV website has a Forms page you can check out and specific pages for special requests, such as personalized license plates.

There are many things you do not have to visit the state DMV office for and can accomplish online, such as changing your address. Did you know that the law says you must inform your state DMV inside of 10 days when you change residence?

This you can easily do online or by calling 1 (800) 777-0133 and asking them to mail a form to you. This normally takes five days. Fill out the form and send it back to the address on top.

You can also download the DMV 14 form from the Forms page and mail it in. If you drop by the DMV office and complete the form there, you will get a DL 43 card that indicates an address change, which you can keep with your license. (You should not staple, tape, or mutilate your license by attempting to stick your address-change info to it.)

Requesting a copy of the DMV records of your spouse or child cannot be done purely online as only the forms are available through the California DMV website. You will either have to visit your local DMV or use the US Postal System.

You need to fill out the INF 1125 form (available through the Forms page), state in a letter why you need the records, show proof of identification, enclose a $5 check/money order and indicate YOUR personal data:

- Name

- Birth Date

- Social Security No.

- California Driver’s License No.

- Signature

Mail your request to: California Department of Motor Vehicles, Office of Information Services, Public Operations Unit G199, Box 944247, Sacramento, CA 94244-2470.

Other peoples’ California DMV records are, generally, open to the public. But personal data, such as home addresses and Social Security Numbers, are only accessible by the court, police agency, or individuals authorized by these agencies under the law.
