Check Driving Record Info: Background Check Triggers

If you are doing business with an auto insurer or rental, anything that entails signing a new contract will probably trigger a check. Changing or adding coverage to an existing contract or policy could also trigger a DMV background check.

To check driving record information, a car insurance or rental company will need to apply for exemptions under the law, which protects the privacy of US citizens from having their personal data accessed. However, the minute you fill out an application with such a company, assume that you have given them the right to check driving record info.

What Triggers Companies to Check Driving Record Info?

Checking your driving history is the auto insurance company’s way of evaluating how much of a risk you are. If you are a high-risk driver, your premium payments will, of course, cost more.

If you have never been involved in any accident or, better yet, have never incurred any violations whatsoever despite many years of driving, lower insurance payments become more likely.

However, each insurance company has its own method of evaluating applicants, so the infractions on your driving record may or may not have a direct impact on the rates you pay for auto insurance.

Depending on your location, your car insurance company will probably have free access to regular checks of your DMV record. But hardly any company will have the manpower (or inclination) to perform regular checks.

There are certain activities, however, that can trigger a check. If you are applying with the company for the first time, you can expect them to look into your record. Another thing that could trigger a check is a policy upgrade or renewal.

Most car rental companies, meanwhile, check DMV records. So if you apply to rent a car, expect it to trigger a check into your driving history. A car rental company can deny you service for something as “small” as a seatbelt violation.

Many rental companies routinely accept applications over the phone. But this does not mean that you will be able to rent a car when you get to your destination.

So if you know of any infraction, especially in the past two years, be up front with the rental company and ask if they will check driving record info before approving your application. Some may not consider your infraction/s, but it is best to know while it is still not too inconvenient for you to do something about it.
