Clear Driving Record: Hard But
Doable
The more a clear driving record
becomes an issue, the harder it is to achieve it. However, it's not
impossible to attain. The time periods that must be kept free of infractions
vary, depending on your purpose.
A clear driving record, can
mean being rid of so many of the worries that plague those with driving records
riddled with infractions: rejected applications, missed opportunities, or
astronomical rates for any kind of business transaction that involves driving a
car. But, although achieving a clear driving record becomes harder each day, it
can still be done.
A Clear Driving Record: An Impossible
Dream?
It may vary across states but,
generally, the DMV will keep your record for around 10 years. What if you are
wrongfully charged for, say, being the cause of an accident?
Even if the court rules you
are innocent, did you know it might be impossible to get the DMV to clear your
record? Even if you are merely INVOLVED in an accident, as a VICTIM, a
background check with the DMV will likely turn up a mark on your record.
What makes it so frustrating
for many is that a DMV background check is becoming more of a routine, in terms
of transacting business, securing loans, and certain legal processes, such as
child custody or adoption.
So if, one night, you decide
to have a single glass of wine with your dinner and drive home, are stopped by a
cop, and register a 0.08 blood alcohol level (in a state with that limit), then
you can kiss your spotless record goodbye.
Of course, a pristine driving
record can be rare nowadays; but one speeding violation does not make your
record a bad one. However, if you have been charged with a DUI violation, you
may want to seek legal help to clear your record.
Free legal assistance may be
available in your state or some legal websites. You can also check online for
DUI support organizations that offer free self-help guidelines on practical
steps that you can take to clear your record.
Although an infraction may
remain on record for 10 years, this does not mean that all background checks
will necessarily cover or consider that period. Depending on the purpose, a
background check can only examine records going back as little as two years,
such as when you rent a car.
Other checks only consider a
three-year period, such as when you apply for a discount on a car insurance
policy with some companies. Insurance companies generally regard you as having a
clear driving record if you have no DUI convictions, accidents, or similar
moving violations within a set period.
