Copy of Driving Record: What to Do So Violations Don’t Become An Issue

Asking for a DMV copy of driving record may become more common to business transactions in the future. Ironically, many Americans are finding it harder to keep their records clean. Erring on the side of safety is best, if you don’t want it to become an issue.

A copy of driving record request is becoming more standard for many transactions. You are unlikely to be able to get car insurance without one. If you need to cross the border into Canada, it may come into play. Even if you are just renting a car for a short drive, it may be requested, or the rental company can do a quick background check. Some companies also have SOPs that require you to furnish a copy of driving record.

Copy of Driving Record: When It Becomes An Issue

If a check of your DMV record is part of the application process of a company you are applying with, you should be told about it and given the option to take yourself out of the running if there is something in your record you would like to remain private.

However, rather than conducting a background check on prospective and current employees, many companies find it much easier (and less of a legal problem) to simply request a copy of your driving record.

If you opt out, of course, your driving record ceases to become an issue. You can simply look for a company that does not require it as part of their hiring or promotion SOP.

A couple of speeding tickets or parking violations are quite common nowadays, especially if you often commute to and from the city. The only cause for worry may be a DUI (driving under the influence) or DWI (driving while intoxicated) charge in your record.

In some states that have a 0.08-blood-alcohol ceiling, something as common as having a glass of wine with your dinner may pose a problem if you happen to be tested a short time after. This is the reason why it is a good idea to have someone at the wheel who has ingested zero alcohol prior to driving.

If you have incurred DWI/DUI or other charges, you may seek legal help to try to clear your record. This can make some infractions less of an issue later on, especially if they were incurred in the last three years (but offenses typically stay on record for 10 years).

Erring on the side of safety, along with the usual precautions of defensive driving, is probably the best way to keep a clean record. This way, it will not become an issue when anyone conducts background checks on you or requests you to furnish a DMV copy of driving record.

It’s possible to get flak for a driving infraction you got involved in a decade ago. And when an opportunity gets lost just because you made a very small violation, getting a copy of your driving record can be a serious issue.
