Driving Records: When Companies Check Them

Three kinds of companies are likely to perform a background check into your driving records. A company you are renting a car from, a company you are buying car insurance from, and a company you are applying for a job with - so make sure your record is clean.

Driving records are used by various companies to evaluate the people they hire or do business with. Generally, there are three kinds of companies that will perform background checks or request a copy of driving records.

When Do Companies Check Driving Records?

1. Rental Car Companies

It used to be that not all rental companies checked the DMV records of their customers. But, nowadays, many do the minute a potential customer signifies the intention to rent a car.

Some companies, on the other hand, may confirm your reservation on the phone and then disqualify you later on. Examples of violations in your record that can make a rental car company reject your business include the following.

a. infractions incurred in the past couple of years

b. violating the seat belt law

c. driving with an expired or suspended license

d. accidents (even those that were not your fault)

e. fleeing an accident

f. reckless driving violations

g. DWI or DUI violations

2. Auto Insurance Companies

Modes of evaluating insurability vary from one car insurance company to the next. However, car insurers generally have a point system that they use to determine if they will charge you a higher premium and by how much.

Most companies use the Safe Driver Insurance Plan, a system derived from guidelines issued by the ISO (Insurance Services Office). Although, under certain circumstances, a company may not conduct a DMV background check on you, most companies will in the following instances.

a. the first time you apply for insurance coverage

b. when changing to a policy that will cover a higher amount

c. when including a new vehicle or changing cars

d. when renewing your policy

If your car insurance company uncovers infractions, this could mean an increase in your insurance payments.

3. Companies Wanting to Hire You for a Job That Requires Heavy Driving

Whether you are being hired as a bus driver or a salesman who will have to engage in long periods of driving, your prospective employer may want to look into your driving history.

Some employers may ask you to attach your driving records to your application. Others may request you to consent to having your records accessed. But some companies apply for exemptions under the law and justify access. This means that your permission may not be needed for such background checks.
